Summer Stars is an annual reading challenge under the Right to Read Literacy Initiative. It runs throughout the months of June, July and August to encourage children to read for fun over the holidays, and keep reading ability steady over the summer months.
Summer Stars Reading Adventure runs from Friday 7th June to Friday 30th August in Kilkenny.
What you need to get started:
« A current library membership: New members can sign up at your local library (Parents or guardians you will need to bring identification and proof of address)
« Summer Stars Reading Booklet: Collect your booklet from your local library
How does it work?
- The challenge is to read or listen to 8 books over the Summer.
- You can borrow books from our libraries or download eBooks, eAudiobooks or eMagazines from our online collection from the comfort of your home!
- Record your progress on the reading booklet and bring it into the library to have it signed / stamped by staff.
- Watch out for regular story times and crafts in libraries, and online quizzes and recommendations on our website (under What's on) and on our social media channels.
- There will be prize draws in each library for readers that have borrowed books from the library that month.
Returning your completed card
When you have finished reading the 8 books or magazines, fill in your name and library card number on the reading booklet.
Hand in your completed booklet to one of our library branches

Email a clear scan or photo to outreach@kilkennylibrary.ie
To receive your Certificate and to be entered in the monthly draw all completed booklets must be returned by Friday 30th August.

Summer Stars Book Review Competition Terms and Conditions
Submit your Book Review to enter!
200 words max on a single A4 page either typed or hand written.
Reviews can include hand drawn illustrations.
Write your library card number and name, on the back of your entry.
Closing date 5pm 31st of August. Entries can be submitted by email to outreach@KilkennyLibrary.ie
or to your local branch.
Entrants must be a Kilkenny Library Member
Entrants must be registered for Summer Stars in a Kilkenny Library
Entrants must be 13 years or under
A selection of book reviews will be shared via our social media platforms
Winner will be judged by senior library staff; judge’s decision is final.
Winner must agree to photo and name being shared via library publicity/marketing channels including on social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter).
Prize is for one E-Reader/tablet.
Kilkenny Library reserves the right to change the specifications of the prize.
