Kilkenny County Council Library Service Launches the 2026 ‘My Little Library Book Bag’ Initiative for Children Starting School

Kilkenny County Council Library Service is delighted to announce the launch of the My Little Library Bag initiative, a nationwide programme designed to support children as they take the important step of starting primary school. From May 8th, families across Kilkenny can collect a free Little Library Bag for their child at any local library.

The Little Library Book Bag contains carefully selected books focused on themes such as starting school, making friends, and building confidence. Each bag also includes a specially designed library card holder, a library card (if the child is not already a member), and helpful tips and information for parents and guardians to support their child’s transition into primary school. The book bags are available in both English and Irish.

Sophie Walsh, Executive Librarian, said: “We are delighted to welcome families who may be visiting the library for the first time. Our libraries are open, friendly spaces where children and parents can feel comfortable and supported, and the Little Library Book Bag is a lovely introduction to all that the library has to offer as children begin their learning journey.”

Families are invited to visit any Kilkenny library branch to collect a free book bag and sign up for a library membership if they haven’t already done so. Library staff will be on hand to help children explore the wide range of books and services available.

Families with children starting junior infants this September are invited to a relaxed, family‑friendly library tour. It’s a great chance to look around, sign up for a free library card, and collect your child’s Little Library Bag with two free books and helpful information for parents.

These tours are especially for families who don’t usually use the library or who are coming for the first time.

This initiative is delivered in partnership with public libraries nationwide, aims to nurture a lifelong love of reading and learning among young children.
