Summer Stars Reading Adventure 2026

Kilkenny County Council Library Service is delighted to launch the Summer Stars Reading Adventure 2026, a nationwide initiative that encourages children to explore the joy of reading throughout the summer holidays.

This popular annual programme invites young readers of all ages to discover new books, spark their imagination and build a lifelong love of reading in a fun and relaxed way.
Summer Stars Reading Adventure celebrates curiosity, creativity and discovery, with an exciting range of books, activities and events available in all library branches throughout June, July and August. Children can track their reading, collect rewards and take part in special workshops, storytimes and creative sessions.

Key Highlights

•    Participation:

Open to all children, Summer Stars challenges participants to read as many books as they can over the summer months, with small rewards and incentives along the way to celebrate their achievements.

•    Events:

Kilkenny Libraries will host a wide range of exciting events and activities, including storytelling sessions, creative workshops, and interactive experiences designed to make reading fun, social and engaging.

How to Join

1.    Registration for Summer Stars:

Children can sign up at any Kilkenny Library branch. Library membership is free for everyone—simply bring a parent/guardian ID and proof of address to get started. 

2.    Join the library online:

Families also have the option to join the library online here. You will receive a temporary library number, which you can bring to the library along with valid ID to complete the membership process and collect your Summer Stars Reading Booklet and join the adventure.

3.    Reading Log:

Children will receive a reading log or activity booklet to track the books they read. They can also write reviews, draw pictures, and share their thoughts on their favourite stories.

4.    Attend Events:

Take part in the many library events and activities happening across the county to enhance the Summer Stars experience. Check our events page for more details
