Little Library: Early Learning Centre Literacy Initiative

The First 5 Little Library Bags is a national initiative that helps young children to have access to books. It also aims to encourage development of little libraries in early learning centers and encourage a love of books and reading among young children.

88 Early Learning and Care settings, including registered childminders in County Kilkenny received free book bags. These are aimed at children aged 2-5. The bags  contain five books, one in Irish and four in English,  along with a range of resources about literacy development, and a library card.

Libraries across Kilkenny also have Little Library bags available to loan to parents for story times.

The Little Library project is a collaboration between the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY), the Department of Rural and Community Development (DRCD) and the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) to build on the relationships between the Early Learning and Care centres and libraries as part of the First 5 Government Strategy for babies and children and the public libraries Right to Read Programme.
