Little Library: Early Learning Centre Literacy Initiative
The First 5 Little Library Bags initiative is a national initiative, helping young children to have access to books, encourage development of little libraries and encourage a love of books and reading among young children.
88 Early Learning and Care settings, including registered childminders in County Kilkenny received free book bags. These contain five books, one in Irish and four in English aimed at 2 years to 5 year olds, along with a range of resources about literacy development, and a library card.
Libraries across Kilkenny also have Little Library bags available to loan to parents for story times.
Round 2 offers additional book bags for registered Early Learning and care settings,and afterschool services.This will run from November to December 2021.

The project is a collaboration between the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY), the Department of Rural and Community Development (DRCD) and the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) to build on the relationships between the Early Learning and Care centres and libraries as part of the First 5 Government Strategy for babies and children and the public libraries Right to Read Programme.
