Press Release- Bealtaine programme at Kilkenny County Council Library Service

Kilkenny County Council Library Service are delighted to once again participate in the national festival Bealtaine this year, with a wide range of activities and events planned. The Bealtaine Festival celebrates the arts and creativity as we age and is co-ordinated by Age and Opportunity, who promote active living as we get older.  Kilkenny library service is delighted to offer an extensive programme of events to encourage creativity throughout the month of May.

Our programme includes flower arranging at Urlingford Library, art workshops in Callan Library and the Mayfair Library, poetry writing in Graiguenamanagh Library, memoir writing in Thomastown Library, a drama workshop in Ferrybank Library, a foraging trail & tales session at Castlecomer Library and a live musical performance in Loughboy Library.

“The Bealtaine Festival is a highlight of our Age Friendly programming across our branches each year and this year is no different”, says Age Friendly Co-ordinator Karyn Deegan, “Throughout the year we look forward to providing a varied and inclusive programme of events for older people within our communities but Bealtaine provides a wonderful opportunity to try something new, fun and creative. The theme for this year’s festival is Lust for Life and we hope that this year’s programme encourages people to really explore their creativity!”

Also, in May some of our branches will host information sessions on the new Healthy Age Friendly Homes Programme lead by co-ordinator Linda Kirwan. The aim of this programme is to support older people to live in their own homes with dignity and independence, for as long as possible. Linda can provide the participant with access to a range of housing, health and social care supports to help them decide on what they need to live the life they want, to the best of their ability within their community. Alongside Linda, Robert O’Connor and his team will attend these sessions to offer some information on raising awareness around Elder Abuse and safeguarding older people in our community.
